SwimHer
Why it's first
Makes its own extended teen sizes
- Bridges girls' sizes straight into teen plus
- Stocks its own sizes, far less “sold out”
- Age-appropriate coverage, mix-and-match
- One brand's styles; small-batch runs
When she's past the girls' chart but a straight women's size doesn't fit her frame, junior and young-women's plus is the answer. These are the brands that cut 1X to 3X for a teen body, with notes on how each runs and links to live stock.
Short answer, the brands that fit a teen body:
SwimHer and Aerie for mix-and-match, Torrid for trend-forward young-women's plus, and Lands' End for modest 1X to 3X.
Prefer more coverage? We flag modest, higher-coverage styles (rash guards, swim shorts, full one-pieces) on every list.
Mix-and-match tops and bottoms are the secret here, so most of these let you size them separately.

The jump from the kids' chart into junior or women's plus trips up almost everyone. Here's the map.
Girls' 20 is the end of the kids' chart
After it, brands switch you to letters: junior or women's 1X, 2X, 3X. A girls' 20 lands near a women's XL or 1X, but only measurements confirm it.
Junior plus runs shorter and straighter
Best for a younger teen. Aerie and Torrid sit here. Less bust shaping, more youthful styling.
Women's plus runs longer with more shape
Old Navy and Lands' End. Better for a developed teen with a longer torso and fuller bust.
Still in the kids' range? Start with the girls size 18 guide or plus swimwear for tweens.
After girls' 20 (the top of the kids' chart), the next step is junior or women's plus, usually 1X, 2X, 3X. A girls' 20 roughly bridges into a women's XL or 1X depending on the brand. Measure chest, waist and hip and match the brand's chart rather than guessing from the girls' number.
They overlap but are cut differently. Junior plus is shaped for a younger, often shorter and straighter teen figure, while women's plus assumes a fuller bust and hip and a longer torso. Aerie and Torrid lean junior; Old Navy and Lands' End lean women's. For an in-between teen, try both and keep what fits the torso length best.
Aerie, Lands' End and Torrid all sell tankini tops and bottoms separately, which is ideal for a teen whose top and bottom sizes differ. Mix-and-match is the single best trick for the junior plus body, because you almost never fit one straight number top to bottom.
Yes. Lands' End and SwimHer both offer higher-coverage one-pieces, swim shorts and longer tops in junior and teen plus sizes. For full coverage plus sun protection, look at long-sleeve rash-guard sets. See our modest swimsuits guide.
